Mia Amor Mottley will be the new Prime Minister of Barbados following an election victory today. Miss Mottley will also take under her wings the role of the first female Prime Minister of Barbados.
Barbadians have selected the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) in a landslide victory having secured all thirty electoral seats.
It was the first time in post-independence era in Barbados that there were a clean sweep of seats by a single political party. It was also the first time that a prime minister (Freundel Stuart) did not secure his seat during an election in Barbados.
In the wee hours of this morning, Mottley acknowledged the concession speech of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart (leader of the Democratic Labour Party DLP)), who took the full blame for his election loss. Stuart said this will be his last effort at contesting an election.
She also thanked some of the chief pillars within her party including Dr. Jerome Walcott, Dame Billie Miller, Hartley Henry, Clyde Mascoll, George Payne.
The Prime Minister elect, showed reverence and thanks to God for the election win and urged Barbadians that times ahead will not be easy, but many hands make light work.
She promised increase in old age pensions, improvements in the bus service by fixing and purchasing new buses, a functioning social partnership, and to release of a recent IMF report so all and sundry can see the true status of the Barbados economy.
Ms. Mia Mottley, 52, becomes Barbados' eighth Prime Minister and will now join the list as the fifth female prime ministers within the region which includes Kamla Persad-Bissessar (Trinidad and Tobago), Portia Simpson Miller (Jamaica), the late Janet Jagan (Guyana), and the late Dame Eugenia Charles (Dominica).
There was a voter turn of 60% of the registered voters of 255,833. The valid votes of 2018 were 153,745 whereas the invalid votes were approximately 500. The BLP secured 111,968 or 72.83% of the votes, whereas the BLP with the next highest amount of votes secured 33,985 or 22.10% of the vote cast.
A total of 134 candidates were nominated to contest the 2018 election. There were 36 women and 98 men contesting the 2018 election. These spread across eight political parties.
